A painting of a nude does not usually offer an artist the advantage of background elements there are no "props." The design of such a painting must stand on its own.

Early Light was a painting that just flowed; it almost painted itself. I first applied gesso, (a material like plaster of Paris that can be used as a ground on hardboard painting surfaces like masonite), in thick, broad strokes. I then painted on top of the gesso, sprinkling color into it, to reveal the different patterns formed by the gesso. In the end, the result is a transparent effect; you can almost see beyond the figure to the underlying structure which forms the design.

Early Light is a painting of intimacy, of domesticity. It is simply a celebration of the female form.
